Master Student for a Master’s Thesis on Identification of protein corona proteins on magnetic nanoparticles and their effect on cellular association (m|f|d)

Research Focus:

The interaction of nanomaterials and their surroundings is determined by the composition and physico-chemical properties of their surface. Typically, the nanomaterial surface is coated with specific molecules and chemical reactive groups which will determine the use and application. This can be particularly challenging when addressing living cells, due to their propensity opsonization and subsequent uptake by, e.g. phagocytic cells.

The goal of this thesis is to investigate the properties of nanoparticles in the presence of blood proteins to improve the understanding of nano-bio interaction and to tune the response of nanomaterials towards cells for in-vitro magnetic assisted cell separation applications.

Your role:

  • Your masters project will focus on full physical characterization and evaluate the performance outcome of the surface modification in cell-based assays 
  • As part of this work, you will do a chemical modification of nanoparticles with specialized polymers towards stealth coating
  • You will work closely with two R&D teams specializing in immunology and cell separation, as well as nano-chemistry and bioconjugation
  • On a regular basis you will thoroughly record your results and prepare project reports, which you will present at internal group meetings and inter-departmental seminars.
  • For registration and submission of you master´s thesis you have to find a supervisor at your home university and conduct the corresponding communication.

Your profile:

  • You have a bachelor degree / You are a master student in Biotechnology, Biochemistry or Chemistry with excellent grades, and you are interested in the interface between nanotechnology and immunology.
  • Ideally, you already had initial experience with techniques and methodologies of cellular and molecular biology or bioconjugation.
  • You demonstrate ample communication and collaboration skills and you display a talent for creative solutions.
  • You are expected to write your thesis in English. Good written and spoken English skills are essential.
  • You are highly self-motivated, goal-oriented with excellent problem solving skills and have demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a multidisciplinary team with strong organizational skills.
